The new school year has just begun in Australia and once again we are proud to have a student representing us at St. Mary’s College, Nigawa Gakuin’s sister school in Ipswich, QLD. The students and teachers at St. Mary’s, along with her host family, have welcomed Sahori with open arms, ensuring that the transition into her new surroundings has been both smooth and exciting. The year ahead will provide many challenges, but we trust that Sahori will make the most of this wonderful opportunity and be a fine ambassador for our two schools to further develop our friendship. As always, the noticeboard on the 2nd floor in the high school will have regular updates from Sahori as well as photos and information about the exchange program with St. Mary’s College.

１月になり、オーストラリアの学校では新学年・新学期が始まりました！　そして今年度も仁川学院高校から１名、姉妹提携校のSt. Mary’s Collegeへ留学生を送り出せたことを我々一同は誇らしく思っています。留学先のオーストラリア・クイーンズランド州イプスウィッチにあるSt. Mary’s Collegeでも、生徒、先生方、ホストファミリーの皆さんが諸手を挙げて我々の生徒・サホリを大歓迎してくれています！　この留学期間で多くの挑戦にぶつかるでしょうが、彼女ならきっとこの留学という素晴らしい機会を最大現に活用し、仁川学院とSt. Mary’s Collegeの友好関係が更に深まるような、橋渡しとしての役割もになってくれると信じています。今後も、本校２階の留学掲示板で、サホリからの定期報告としてのレポートや写真を掲示していきます！

The junior high and elementary schools were recently lucky enough to have a special overseas visitor. Emie was born and raised in France, but has been living in Singapore for the past several years and decided to take advantage of her school holidays to experience Japanese school life for the first time. As with previous visitors, our students were keen to ensure that Emie made the most of her time with us through various activities, only wishing that she could have stayed longer.

Using her remarkable language skills in English, Japanese and her native French, Emie taught us about her home in France and her current life in Singapore. She also joined several elementary school classes receiving an enthusiastic welcome from the 5th and 6th graders (see picture).

We will be sure to stay in contact with Emie and look forward to her next visit later this year. Merci, Emie!

「エミさん、訪問ありがとう！」

先日、本校の中学校と小学校では、海外からの特別訪問者を迎えることができました！

彼女の名前はエミさん。生まれも育ちもフランスですが、ここ数年はシンガポールで暮らしています。彼女の学校の休暇を利用して、日本の学校生活を体験してみたいという思いから来校してくれました。今までも多くの訪問者を受け入れてきたように、本校の生徒たちは色んな活動を通してエミさんが最大限に充実した時間を過ごせるように励んでいました。もっとエミさんと長い時間過ごしたかったくらいです。

英語、日本語、フランス語の三カ国語が話せるエミさん。そのすばらしい語学の能力を活かして、母国フランスでのこと、最近のシンガポール暮らしのことを私たちに教えてくれました。また、小学校５・６年生の授業にも参加してくれ、小学生も熱烈な歓迎をしていました（写真がその時の様子です）！

これからもエミさんとは連絡を取り合っていきたいですし、次回の訪問を心待ちにしています！　メルシー、エミさん！

The new academic year has just begun at Saint Mary’s Catholic High School, our sister school in the U.S. This year, one second grade high school student has taken on the big challenge and responsibility of representing Nigawa Gakuin for a one-year study abroad experience. After completing a 6-month orientation period in Japan, Wakana arrived in Phoenix, Arizona in the middle of the dry summer heat of 44 degrees! Just a few days later, she joined her new friends and teachers, in full uniform, to commence classes – of course, in English!

Wakana’s classmates here at Nigawa have already had an opportunity to talk with her during an English class video chat, and we are looking forward to seeing regular updates and photos on our international noticeboard. Good luck Wakana!

私たちの姉妹提携校である、アメリカのSaint Mary’s Catholic High Schoolでも新学期が始まりました。今年度は本校から１名、現在高校２年生の生徒が仁川学院を代表して渡米し、同校での留学生活を始めています。出発まで半年間のオリエンテーションを行い、アリゾナ州・フェニックスに到着したワカナさん。到着した日はなんと４４度の気温でした！！　到着して数日後には、もう新しい制服を着て、新しい仲間や先生方と出会い、授業も始まりました。

約一年間、日本や私たちとは離れて暮らしますが、すでに本校の英会話の授業では、ビデオチャットを通してワカナさんとやりとりをしています。今後は、定期的に彼女から本校に送られてくる「留学便り」も楽しみです。留学掲示板を是非チェックしてください。

This week, the junior high school is lucky to have a special visitor from the United States who is visiting Nigawa during her summer vacation. Marisa’s family is Japanese, but she was born and raised in San Jose, California. School life in the U.S. is very different from that in Japan, and this week will be an opportunity for her to experience first hand these differences. Marisa gave our English class today a very informative presentation on her usual school life, much of which was very eye-opening for our students. We hope that Marisa enjoys her short time at Nigawa and perhaps comes back one day for a longer visit!

「サン・ホセから仁川へ」

今週、仁川学院中学校ではアメリカからの特別訪問者をお迎えしました！　ご家族は日本人ですが、カリフォルニア州のサン・ホセで生まれ育ったマリサさんが、夏休みを利用して本校に来てくれたのです。アメリカでの学校生活と日本の学校生活の違いは非常に異なっています。マリサさんにとっては、その違いを肌で感じる機会です。彼女も、私たちに英語の授業の中で、アメリカでの日常生活についてプレゼンテーションをしてくれました。本校の生徒たちにとっても、「目から鱗」的な情報が満載でした。今回は短期訪問でしたが、また是非日本に来て、今度はもっと長い期間本校を訪れてきてほしいと願っています！

This month, four students who spent 10 months studying in the U.S. (Arizona and Hawaii) returned to Nigawa Gakuin. All of us here at Nigawa had been following their adventures via the monthly reports and photos posted on the exchange noticeboard, and now we have an opportunity to hear first-hand from the students themselves about the many unforgettable experiences they had during their studying abroad.

Not only did this experience help them improve their English skills, they have returned to us as more mature and independent 3rd grade students, ready to face their next big challenge as “jukensei”. In addition, they will also be helping our next students prepare for upcoming exchanges to the U.S. and Australia.

Our warmest regards and thanks go out to our everyone at our sister school Saint Mary’s Catholic High School in Arizona, our new friends at Sacred Hearts Academy in Hawaii, and the host families who supported our students during their time in the U.S.

アメリカから「ただいま！」　そして「おかえり！」

アメリカでの１０ヶ月の留学期間を終え、４名の生徒が今月本校に帰ってきました。そして、彼女たちの帰国後初めてとなった学年朝礼では、高校３年生一同が本人たちの生の声を通してその留学の感想を聞くことができました。

英語力が向上しただけではなく、内面的にもより成熟し自立した人物として戻ってきた４人。これからは、高校３年生、受験生として卒業後の進路や夢に向けて頑張ろうとしています。そして、次にアメリカやオーストラリアに留学していく後輩達をサポートしてくれようとしています。

姉妹提携校であるSaint Mary’s Catholic High School（アリゾナ州）の皆さん、今回から新しい交流が生まれたSacred Hearts Academy（ハワイ州）の皆さん、そして今回彼女たちを支えてくれたホストファミリーの皆さん、本当にありがとうございました！

On April 28, we received a visit from I-Shou International School as part of their Japan study trip. Thanks to our ongoing relationship with Hyogo International Association (HIA), once again we were able to spend a meaningful day with new friends from Taiwan, learning about their culture and introducing them to school life in Japan.

To all the students, teachers and staff from I-Shou who joined the trip, thank you and all the best for the rest of your trip in Japan.

This January we welcomed another exchange student from our sister school in Australia, Padua College. Callum comes to Nigawa having had a keen interest in Japan and the Japanese language for several years, and we are looking forward to helping him make the most of his one-year stay with us. In addition to being highly motivated to improve his Japanese skills, Callum is also planning to take part in many extra-curricular activities at school and wants to see as much of the country as possible. For Nigawa students, this is yet another exciting opportunity to learn more Australia and Padua College, as well as a chance to improve their intercultural communication skills.

カラム君、仁川へようこそ！

この１月から、本校の姉妹提携校であるオーストラリアのパジュア・カレッジからの交換留学生・カラム君が仁川学院での生活を始めています。

彼は以前より日本と日本語に強い関心をもっていた生徒です。これから始まる一年間の留学期間が彼にとって実りあるものとなるように、我々一同協力していきます！

日本語の能力を高めることにとても意欲的なことに加えて、カラム君はできる限り多くの日本国内の土地を訪れたいと思っています。

仁川学院の生徒にとっても、文化交流コミュニケーション・スキルを高めることができる絶好の機会ですし、オーストラリアと自分たちの姉妹提携校のパジュア・カレッジについても学ぶことができる良い一年となりそうです。

Our 3 students currently studying at St. Mary’s Catholic High School in Phoenix, USA, have entered the second half of their study-abroad year. After completing their final exams in December, they had two weeks over Christmas and the New Year to spend with their host families and friends. 「セメスター2　開始！」

現在アメリカ・フェニックスにありますSt. Mary’s Catholic High Schoolに留学中の３名ですが、留学期間も後半にさしかかってきました。１２月に学期末テストを無事に終了した彼女たちですが、その後はクリスマスとニューイヤーにまたがる二週間の休暇に入り、それぞれのホストファミリーや友人たちとの時間を過ごしました。高校職員室横の掲示板にも定期的に彼女たちの様子や写真を掲示し、その内容も更新していますので、是非御覧ください！

Anna, our first exchange student from St. Mary’s College Ipswich in Australia, has completed her one-year exchange at Nigawa. During her experience, Anna took part in all facets of Japanese school life, including club activities and our school trip to Italy. Her enthusiasm and love of Japan has left a lasting impression on her classmates, teachers and host families, and we are looking forward to maintaining contact via skype until we can meet again in person.

Anna, good luck with your first year of university in Australia. We hope to see you again soon!

また会う日まで、アンナ！

豪州セント・メアリーズ・カレッジ・イプスウィッチからの交換留学生の一期生であるアンナさんが、仁川学院での一年間の留学期間を終えました。

この留学期間に、アンナさんは日本の学校生活の様々な活動に参加してくれました。いくつかのクラブを掛け持ちするほど、クラブ活動にも積極的で、更に１２月のイタリア研修旅行にも一緒に参加しました。

彼女の日本に対する情熱と愛はクラスの仲間、先生たち、そしてホストファミリーにも忘れがたい印象を残しました。今後も私たちはスカイプなどを通してアンナさんと交流していく予定です。

アンナさん、オーストラリアでの大学生活頑張ってくださいね！　また会えることを願っています！！

The first ever Nigawa student to participate in our Australian exchange program has returned to Japan after a successful year at St. Mary’s College Ipswich. Rena took on the many challenges that international students face with a positive attitude and great spirit which enabled her to improve her English and understanding of Australian culture. As our first “ambassador”, she has paved the way for future exchanges both to and from Australia, and we are sure that she will make the most of this experience as she continues her school life here at Nigawa.

オーストラリアからおかえりなさい！

豪州セント・メアリーズ・カレッジ・イプスウィッチに一年間留学していた生徒が帰国しました。彼女は本校から同校に留学した初めての生徒であり、仁川学院の代表、そして日豪の「親善大使」として立派に現地で生活してくれました。彼女が築いた道は、今後も数多くの後輩がたどっていくことでしょう。
